With your donation I'm one step closer to the

KFMB NEWS 8 is airing a news story about Zac and his Whitney
trek on Monday, July 3 on the 5:00 news (between 5 and 6).
If you miss it on Monday, the segment will be on the NEWS 8
website, www.kfmb.com, on Wednesday.

My name is Zac York and I am an 18 year-old senior at High Tech High in San Diego, California. Five and a half years ago, when I was 12 years old, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor located on my brain stem. Over the course of the next five years I underwent over 17 surgeries, radiation therapy and numerous setbacks. The tumor left me unable to walk without assistance and for a while I was in a wheelchair. Now, after hundreds of hours of physical therapy, I am able to walk with crutches.
The summer that I was diagnosed, I was training to hike up Mt. Whitney with my father. As a result of the brain tumor, surgeries, and hospitalizations I had to put my climb on hold.
But it was a dream that I held on to and Mt. Whitney became a symbol of hope for my future.
So now, five and a half years later, I am not only training once again to hike up Mt. Whitney this July, but I am using my climb to raise money and awareness for pediatric brain tumor research as my Senior Project for High Tech High.
Pediatric brain tumors are the number one non-traumatic cause of death in children in the United States. My goal is to raise funds to help with the ongoing research for more effective treatments. And ultimately, a cure.
As a result of the brain tumor I have had to learn to walk again. By climbing Mt. Whitney using my crutches, I hope that I can show young people facing challenges similar to mine that there is always hope during the fight. Research is ongoing for treatments, and recovery is possible.
With your help I hope to make a significant contribution toward finding more effective treatments for pediatric brain tumors. And with more research, we are closer to finding cures. Please make a generous donation to my effort.
Your donation is tax-deductible, and can be made to The Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health. The Foundation supports the ongoing research led by my neurosurgeon, Dr. Michael Edwards, who heads The Center for Children’s Brain Tumors.
For more information, please call Denise Ellestad, 650-724-5733 at Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health.
